The County

Powell County runs two lives at once. Along the Mountain Parkway you get the working towns — Stanton, the county seat, and Clay City strung along the Red River bottomland — with courthouse-square buildings, older frame houses, and newer subdivisions at the edges. Push east toward Nada and the Slade side and the county turns into Gorge country: cabins under hemlock and pine, gravel drives, and a growing share of roofs that belong to owners who live somewhere else. What Roofs Face Here

Two different problem sets. In the bottomland towns, the issues are the ordinary ones done slowly: shingle roofs aging out, flashing failing around chimneys, gutters overwhelmed in big rain, and wind damage when storms ride the Parkway corridor. In the cabin country, the canopy is the story — hemlock and pine needles mat in valleys and behind chimneys, holding moisture against shingles year-round, and falling limbs do sudden damage. Shaded cabin roofs can wear out on the north face while the south face still looks fine. Neither situation fixes itself, and both show up clearly in a photo. Powell County storm timing is NWS Jackson territory (weather.gov/jkl) — worth a check after any front before assuming the roof is fine.

Beattyville to Stanton is a familiar run up KY-11 — the far side of the county takes a little longer for the far cabin roads. That’s inside our normal working range, not a special trip. Most Powell County jobs get scheduled within the week; genuine emergencies — active leaks, storm holes — get tarped as fast as we can safely get there. Gravel and one-lane cabin access is normal for us; just tell us in your text what the drive looks like.

Do you cover Clay City, or just Stanton?

My cabin is on a gravel road near Nada. Is that a problem?

Can you look at a rental cabin roof while I’m out of state?

Yes. That’s common in Powell County. Have your cleaner or guest text us a photo, or we’ll photograph the roof ourselves and send you what we find before any work is approved. Nothing gets done without your written go-ahead, and you see pictures of the finished repair.
